EXCERPT:

“My God, woman.”

“Too much?” She crosses her arms over her chest. “I wanted something that made me feel sexy. It’s stupid and trashy, isn’t it?”

Uncrossing her arms and nodding towards her body I say, “That could never be considered stupid or trashy. I’m pretty sure it’s the best damn idea you’ve ever had.”

She laughs. “Really?”

I nod enthusiastically. “Uh huh, definitely. Best. Idea. Ever.”

REVIEW: DISMISSED - KIRSTY MCMANUS

***DISCLAIMER: I received this book via Xpresso Book Tours in exchange for an honest review. Any thoughts and opinions are my own.***

BOOK DETAILS:

Dismissed by Kirsty McManus
Publication date: April 28th 2015
Genres: Romance, Young Adult

Synopsis:

The second Lizzie White lays eyes on her new English teacher Brandon Thomas, she is hooked. Brandon is young, cool and sexy – and nothing like the other teachers at her school. But of course he is forbidden from fraternising with the students or forming any sort out of outside hours relationship. And combined with the fact that Lizzie’s best friend Taylor declared her feelings for Brandon first (and has therefore claimed theoretical ownership), Lizzie decides it’s all too hard and focuses on a budding relationship with fellow student and class clown Gabe instead. But then Jason shows up. Jason is Brandon’s trouble-making twin brother who seems to have no qualms about flirting with students or leaving a trail of broken hearts wherever he goes. Before she knows it, Lizzie is dragged into a confusing world of blurred lines and lustful thoughts, where loyalties are tested and true feelings are explored.

Review:

Dismissed left me feeling disappointed. I am very sad that this book turned out the way that it did. By now, you guys know that I love romances, especially taboo/scandalous romances. From the blurb of this book I thought I would get just that. Unfortunately, I didn't.

Lizzie and Brandon are "in love" with each other yet they've barely even spoken to each other outside the confines of a student/teacher relationship. But we, the readers, are supposed to believe that they're meant to be together. And then there's the imaginary triangle between Taylor and Brandon and Lizzie. I say 'imaginary' because Brandon doesn't even know he's been claimed but these two girls are competing over him. Throw in a mischievous twin and you've got yourself a messed up square of people who really have no business being together. Period.

I really did not like the dynamic between Lizzie and Taylor. Taylor is not a real friend to Lizzie but Lizzie has no backbone to just tell her to buzz off somewhere. This girl is superficial and stuck up and Lizzie is the complete opposite. Then through in the fact that Taylor is the pretty blonde and Lizzie is just the "boring brunette" and you've got a recipe for Saved by the Bell episode.

The writing isn't that bad, though, which is what kept me reading. This book is short, thank goodness, because I honestly don't know if I would have been able to finish if it were any longer. There was a lot of potential here for a really great book but it just kind of fell flat.

RELEASE TOUR: LAWYER UP - KATE ALLURE + MEET THE BACHELORS + GIVEAWAY!!

Bachelors of Lawyer Up

Kate Allure’s deliciously sexy LAWYER UP is an erotic anthology featuring three stories, each with a drop dead gorgeous hero. Get to know Hawk, Jon, and Emmit (aka the “Playboy Judge of Orleans”) as each of these heroes answer some personal questions below. You are guaranteed to find your next book boyfriend…or three!

Hero from OF “UNSOUND MIND AND BODY”

Full name: Franklin Lucky Hawk Ross, Jr.
Nickname: Hawk
Occupation: Successful lawyer in a big city law firm in Omaha, NE
Height: Tall…dark and handsome
Hair color: Jet-black
Eye color: Dark brown, almost black
Age: Late thirty-something
Originally from: The slowly dying town of Willow Pond, Nebraska

Describe yourself in 100 words or less:

I’m Omaha Indian and proud of my ancestry after having spent summers on the reservation with my mother. While I grew up in a tiny town, I love the energy of big cities. I work extremely hard and often travel internationally, but when I’m alone with a woman, then I’m totally focused on her…and some of that focus can take on a decidedly kinky flair. It’s not that I don’t like romance—you know, the hearts and flowers stuff—but the raw energy of two people exploring each other’s bodies and pushing the limits stirs that wild native blood in me.

What is the hardest part of your job? What is the most rewarding?

The hardest thing about being a lawyer is when I don’t win and let down my client. That doesn’t happen often but in those rare times it does, it rips me up inside. I hate it. As for rewarding, I’ve enjoyed handling the few remaining elderly clients from my father’s small town practice now that he’s retired…that’s very personal work, directly helping people. But, I truly come alive when I’m winning a major case…the Omaha in me loves a good battle and the strategy of “counting coups” on an unsuspecting opponent, which in modern times is less an act of bravery as it is displaying cunning against a foe.

When not working, how do you spend your time?

I pretty much work all the time, between winding down my father’s Willow Pond practice and the big city lawsuits that take me around the country or beyond. I think if I had someone in my life, I would find a way to slow down a bit…No I know that I’d make time, so that I could enjoy the companionship of a special woman.

If money was no object and you had 3 weeks of vacation what would you do with your time?

I’m single and successful, so money really isn’t an issue for me, although my time is limited. But if I had the time, I would love to whisk a lover away to a private tropical island for long session of playing Tarzan and Jane. I just need to find the right person.

Hero from “ATTORNEY-CLIENT PRIVILGES”

Full Name: Jon Bateman
Occupation: Hot-shot L.A. lawyer in a major firm
Height: Medium height and build
Hair color: An unruly mop of sun-bleached sandy hair, sort of California surfer-dude
Eye color: Deep green
Age: 35
Originally from: Nowhere special, but he calls L.A. home

Describe yourself in 100 words or less:

I feel like I’m on the Bachelorette, but here goes…I’m driven to succeed, which has made me the top performer in my firm. I don’t like being bothered with minutia, such as taking on useless pro bono work just because of a firm policy that we contribute back to the community. Some say it’s because I’m wounded after my cheating wife’s betrayal, but, if anything, all the free time that I have now has made me more successful. I give one hundred and ten percent to my career. Who needs a woman? Well except for that one thing, of course.

What is the hardest part of your job? What is the most rewarding?

None of it’s that hard, if my boss will just ease up on the pro bono thing. As for rewarding, did I mention I had the most billable hours of my entire firm last year…by a wide margin. I do high-end, high profile criminal cases mostly, and when they’re actually innocent it is the most rewarding. But whether they’re innocent or not, my role in the U.S. legal system is to do my best to get them acquitted—and my best is quite good based on my record of wins.

When not working, how do you spend your time?

Umm. I work a lot, even the weekends. I used to like to surf. Maybe I should take that up again. Oh, and I enjoy a good book now and then.

If money was no object and you had 3 weeks of vacation what would you do with your time?

My ex-wife got half of my assets, so money is an object, although I do have way more than 3 weeks of vacation stored up. In the spirit of make-believe…if my bank account was overflowing I would… Hmm, not sure what I’d do. I guess going to Hawaii and trying my hand at surfing would be nice, although it would be far better if I had someone to do it with.

Hero from “OF WRITS AND WITHING”

Full Name: Judge Emmit Stockard
Nickname: Playboy Judge of Orleans
Occupation: Chief Judge in the Orleans Parish Civil District Court
Height: 6 feet
Hair color: Salt and Pepper, lusciously thick and slightly curled
Eye color: Chocolaty-brown
Age: mid-50’s
Personality: Radiates a bad-boy masculinity, think Richard Gere in his fifties
Originally from: born in Massachusetts but family moved to NoLa when he was a child

Describe yourself in 100 words or less:

I like to think I’m a fair and honest judge, at least I strive to be. Sometimes, however, I can’t help teasing the attorneys performing in my court, especially the lady lawyers, which might have contributed to my playboy reputation. But inside I’m not like that. I’m not saying I don’t have a wicked streak when it comes to women and sex, but now that my very-public divorce is a thing of the past, I’m ready to find someone to share my life with, a woman that can handle the bad-boy in me. So, where are you, I wonder?

What is the hardest part of your job? What is the most rewarding?

As a judge I must follow the law at all times and, sometimes that forces me to rule against people who truly need help. It’s really the only part of my profession that I dislike. So the most rewarding aspect is the opposite—making things right for people that have been hurt by some injustice. Then there are the perks of being chief judge—I love the perks. Top among those is wielding power in and out of the court…well out of court I’m mostly talking about power in the bedroom…if you get my drift.

When not working, how do you spend your time?

Back to the perks. I get invited to a lot of parties and events because of my position. I used to love going to them with a different beautiful woman on my arm every night, but now I find it all just tiring. It will feel different, I think, when it’s someone that I admire, someone I’m proud to have on my arm for more than her good looks. And, I’ll enjoy introducing her to my favorite hobby—racing my motorcycle down rural roads that twist and turn. And food, I’m a bit of a foodies and love NoLa’s best restaurants.

If money was no object and you had 3 weeks of vacation what would you do with your time?

I’d head out on my motorcycle and just see where it takes me. Explore every hidden byway in the great state of Louisiana and then maybe head west for a bit. It’s on my bucket list but I’ve been holding out until I can find someone to share this experience with. Again I ask, where are you? Sometimes I get this feeling that this person might be right in front of me and I just have to open my eyes to see her.

Loveswept

Perfect for fans of Monica Murphy and Cecy Robson, Sidney Halston’s scorching new MMA romance proves there are no holds barred when it comes to seduction.

Growing up an Army brat, Violet Channing could never meet her dad’s high expectations. But in the eyes of her best friend, she could do no wrong. He even insisted that he should be her first kiss. Now Cain Sorensen is all grown up, hardened by years in special ops and always looking for a good fight. Tall, with striking blue eyes and impossibly blond hair, he’s a modern-day Viking warrior. Of course, Violet’s all grown up, too, and she’s ready to surrender to his every command.

Cain knows he’s bad for Violet. His work is dangerous, and his hobbies are downright deadly. As a private mercenary and a mixed martial arts fighter, he could never let such an innocent soul into his world. And yet his most grueling combat training is no match for Violet’s killer curves, hot touch, and suggestive glances. Now all of Cain’s most explosive fantasies are coming true—but once they cross the line between friends and lovers, there’s no turning back.

Excerpt:

Cain hadn’t left Tarpon Springs, Florida, for this long since he’d moved there four years ago. He’d grown up on an army base, then served in the military for eight years before retiring, and this was the first time in his adult life that he felt he had a home. After one too many fights in school, his father had forced him to enlist, to follow the path of his father and his father’s father. The Sorensons bred military men. Then his second tour ended and he didn’t want the army to be a career, so he’d gotten out, much to his father’s dismay. Right now, if someone asked him why he had signed up with IMC, International Military Coalition, as a contractor, he couldn’t answer. At the time he’d only seen the dollar bills. The pay was amazing compared to what the U.S. government had paid him for risking his life for years as an Army Ranger, and signing up to make four times the amount with a private company seemed like the obvious next step.

As soon as Cain walked out of the airport, he hailed a taxi to take him straight to the Pier. It was Friday night, and his friends would undoubtedly be there. Plus, he needed a beer . . . or seven. On the ride over, he received a text from Iggy Mitchell, another mercenary he’d met overseas. Iggy had lost a leg in a tour in Iraq a couple of years ago, and when he wasn’t on a mission for IMC, he worked as a consultant in Tampa specializing in testing firewalls and other online security threats. In other words, he was a professional hacker. The two men had quickly hit it off and sparred together during their free time. Iggy’s hard work and zest for life made the prosthetic leg a nonissue. One evening Iggy had mentioned how he loved to gamble on a series of underground fights put together by some Russians. The text Cain was currently reading was the address of a fight happening in a few days. But Cain wasn’t a gambling man, so he wasn’t interested. He slid the phone back into his pocket and settled in for the forty-five-minute cab ride to the Pier.

It was raining when the taxi arrived. He swung the big duffle bag over his shoulder and looked around the familiar town before he reached to open the front door. A hand on his shoulder stopped him. “Hey, man! You’re back.” It was Tony, his friend, sparring partner, and professional mixed martial arts fighter, whom he had helped train a few months ago.

“Cain, honey, so glad you’re home!” Tony’s wife, Francesca, threw her arms around him for a big hug. He wasn’t big on contact, and he awkwardly put his arm around her waist and patted her back.
“Come on, let’s go inside,” Tony said. “The rest of the guys are on their way. Do they know you’re back? Where were you, by the way?”

“Libya. Just arrived. No one knows,” Cain replied.

Francesca hissed. “Libya. Fuck. That’s not safe.”

“No.”

“Still quite the conversationalist, I see.” Tony patted Cain roughly on the back.

“Leave the man alone. He just came back from hell, he doesn’t need that attitude tonight. By the way . . .” She poked Cain in the shoulder. “Don’t you ever fuckin’ leave again without letting us know you’re leaving or where you’re going. We were worried.” She reached in and hugged him again.

“Violet?” Cain asked when she released him.

“What about her?” Francesca asked.

“She okay?”

“Ask her yourself—she’s here.”

Cain tried not to smile, but his lips seemed to curl upward all on their own. He hadn’t seen Violet for years until a few months ago, when she’d moved to town. He was happy he’d get to see her tonight. As had always been the case, her warm smile was the perfect salve for his shitty mood.
Cain put a hand on Francesca’s upper arm. “Wait—before we go in, are there any fights coming up? Sign me up for something. Soon.” Francesca was co-owner of Worth the Fight Academy, a mixed martial arts gym that trained professional cage fighters, which was what Cain had been doing before heading off a few months earlier.

“You just got into town. You need to take a breather. We can talk about it when you’re settled back.”

“I’m settled. I’m back. Sign me up.”

“Fine. But tonight, relax, at least for a few hours. Come have a drink and say hello to everyone. We’ll find you something tomorrow,” Francesca said.

As soon as he opened the door to the familiar laughter and smell he started to feel better.

Review:

Laid Out quickly made it onto my favorite's list! This book easily gets 5 stars from me. Violet and Cain had a thing for each other when they were younger but Cain's best friend Jeremy also liked Violet, too. So Cain backed off. He was prepared to play the friend role and let Jeremy have her forever. When they both lose Jeremy in their lives, Cain and Violet go their separate ways.

And then suddenly Violet is back in Cain's life and she's all grown up.

Cain knows he needs to stay away from her but that proves to be his hardest mission yet.

I LOVED Cain and Violet. She's a little bit sassy but still naive and a little bit innocent. Cain is just the opposite. And he tries so hard to just be Violet's friend and not let anything happen between them. But it proves to be too much. The tension between these two is HOT and palpable. Violet's wit kept me laughing throughout the whole story, well, at least in the moments that I wasn't lusting after Cain.

Seriously.

Sidney Halston knows how to write sexy men! Cain is hot, hot, hot, and I'm not a "book boyfriend" person but I will make an exception for him. He was sometimes possessive but it was because he didn't want to lose his chance with her. Yes, he did push her away at times but that was also because.....well, you'll have to read the book to find out. I won't spoil it for you!

This is #4 in a series but it can be read as a stand-alone. This was the first book I've read in the series but you can all bet your beautiful backsides that I'm going to be reading the rest! I can't NOT read them!

Sidney Halston lives her life by one simple rule: “Just do it.” And that’s exactly what she did. At the age of thirty, having never written anything other than a legal brief, she picked up a pen for the first time to pursue her dream of becoming an author. That first stroke sealed the deal, and she fell in love with writing. Halston lives in South Florida with her husband and children.
